Plot Summary

Shiv Kakkar is a banker from Amritsar who gets a lucrative opportunity to work in Budapest along with his childhood friend, Radha. He is a fun-loving playboy back home and continues this behaviour in Budapest. Saira Singh is a young woman haunted by mysterious nightmares of drowning to death. She lives by herself in Budapest and works as a chocolatier. Shiv happens to stumble upon Saira's shop while on a date with a woman, but finds himself deeply attracted to Saira. Shocked by the weird connection she feels with Shiv, Saira initially rejects his advances, but eventually succumbs. The next day, Saira reveals that she has never felt such a connection before but is in a mess as she has a boyfriend. Unwilling to let go of their connection, Shiv interrupts Saira's date with her boyfriend Manav and shows her that she would rather be with him than with her boyfriend. Manav breaks up with her, and Shiv and Sairah start spending time together, growing close.

One night, they go to a club where Saira tearfully reveals to Shiv that she has a fear of water because her parents drowned after a car accident when she was two years old. Shiv reveals to Saira that he has to leave for a business trip for a week. They decide to see how they feel after a week's separation. During Shiv's absence, Saira gets to know Zakir and confides in him about her nightmares. During one of their dinners, Zakir drugs Saira and kidnaps her. Saira wakes up and finds herself trapped in Zakir's isolated mansion on an island off the coast. She demands him to let her go, but he refuses, saying that he spent his whole life looking for her. He explains that he was madly in love with her in a previous life, but his love remained unrequited.

Zakir shows Saira their past life story through his mind-reading ability. In 800 AD, they were warriors from opposing tribes who fell in love with each other during a war. Zakir was Qaabir, the prince of the Muraki tribe who wanted peace with the rival Ragistan tribe led by King Rajkumar Rao (Raj). Saira was Saiba, the princess of Ragistan and Raj's daughter who was engaged to Kaabir (Shiv), Raj's most loyal warrior. Qaabir tried to elope with Saiba but was caught by Raj and Kaabir. Raj ordered Qaabir to be killed by drowning him in a lake while Saiba watched helplessly. Saiba then jumped into the lake herself and drowned with Qaabir.

Zakir tells Saira that he has been waiting for her for 800 years and wants to complete their love story. He also reveals that he killed Shiv by shooting him when he came looking for Saira at his mansion. Saira is devastated and tries to escape from Zakir's clutches. She manages to contact Radha through Zakir's phone and asks him to help her. Radha informs Manav about Saira's situation and they team up to rescue her.

Meanwhile, Shiv is revealed to be alive as he wore a bulletproof vest under his shirt. He also arrives at Zakir's island with the help of a local woman named Maya who works for Zakir. Shiv confronts Zakir and fights him while Saira tries to run away from the mansion. Zakir chases Saira to the edge of a cliff and tries to force himself on her. Shiv arrives and pushes Zakir off the cliff into the sea. He then embraces Saira and tells her that he loves her. Saira realizes that Shiv is her true soulmate and confesses her love to him. They kiss and hug each other as Zakir emerges from the water and shoots them both. They fall into the sea together, holding hands.

The film ends with a voice-over by Irrfan Khan who narrates that Shiv and Saira's love story was destined to be incomplete in this life too, but they will meet again in another life to finish their raabta (connection).

Reception

Raabta received mixed to positive reviews from critics. The film was praised for its performances, especially by Sushant Singh Rajput and Jim Sarbh, its action sequences, its songs and its direction. However, some critics felt that the film was too long, had a weak script and lacked originality. The film also faced comparisons with Magadheera, a 2009 Telugu film with a similar plot. The producer of Magadheera, Allu Aravind, filed a case against the makers of Raabta for plagiarism, but later withdrew it after watching the film.
